Bike Virginia 2004 – Shenandoah Odyssey

Bike Virginia 2004: Shenandoah Odyssey

Virginia is filled with many places that stir the imagination with remembrances of a time forgotten. Few places can evoke a sense of being transported back in time like Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Many mountain passes and forest clearings have not changed in over 150 years. Neat Scotch, Irish, German, and Mennonite farms retain the same charm as when they were constructed. Rough hewn rail fences stand at the "Fields of Lost Shoes," where in 1864 VMI cadets did not just learn history, they made it.

Our Shenandoah Valley Odyssey began and ended in the tranquil town of Bridgewater, home to the finest collection of vernacular architecture in the Valley. The campus of Bridgewater College served as our Bike Virginia home. After a day of touring the valley's majestic scenery and visiting our first of three caverns, we continued northward to Harrisonburg. Monday, we biked along the base of the mighty Massanutten Mountain to the historic town of New Market. All up and down the Shenandoah Valley, we experienced 300 miles of history, southern hospitality and natural beauty -- a place that time may have forgotten, but you never will.
