Captain John Smith's Trail

Captain John Smith's Trail

John Smith traveled the James River many times between 1607 and 1609, marveling at Virginia's natural beauty and trading with Indians to keep the settlers at Jamestown alive. Captain John Smith's Trail is a 40-site water trail and auto tour for modern explorers.

Smithfield, Virginia - A quiet place to go hog wild! HAMS, HISTORY & HOSPITALITY await you in Smithfield!

Smith's Fort Plantation

Site of John Smith's Fort

John Smith earned the title captain serving with the Hapsburg cavalry along the contested border between the Austrian and Turkish empires. Most notably, he devised a plan of attack to lift the Turkish siege of Coniva. Given his experience, Smith no doubt recognized that Jamestown was vulnerable to attack, particularly after exploring the surrounding terrain while trading with the Natives. In 1609, during his tenure as president of the colony, Smith built a defensive position on the southern shore of the James. From a bluff above Gray’s Creek, the colonists could defend themselves from the more hostile of their Algonquian neighbors or the Spanish galleons some feared might come to drive them from the New World. According to Smith’s Generall Historie, he never completed the fort because he was called back to Jamestown when rats infested the corn supply. Earthworks two feet high are all that remain of the fort, but these are considered the oldest structure of English origin in Virginia.
